The Art of Glaze: Understanding and Mastering Ceramic Glazing Welcome to The Art of Glaze, where we turn raw minerals into stunning finishes through heat, chemistry, and creativity. This course will help you build a strong foundation in glaze science, application techniques, and troubleshooting, so you can confidently experiment, refine, and create. Glazing is more than just adding color—it’s about controlling how glass forms on clay, understanding the interplay of materials at high temperatures, and even predicting how a glaze will behave before it enters the kiln. In week one your will be introduced to the chemistry of glazing : WEEK 1 - Class duration : 2 hours What is glaze? Firing temperatures ie. Cones and temperatures The components of a glaze How to make a glaze recipe base How to prepare and record a glaze components plan Measure and mix your glaze Health and Safety when using glazes How to seive and blend your glaze Dipping your bowls in your glazes Clean your bowl bottoms and prepare for firing In Week 2 you will look at your results from Week 1 and expand your knowledge even further.. WEEK 2 - Class duration: 2 hours Common glaze problems and how to fix them Layers and mixing Reformulating the glazes if needed Mixing and dipping for new combinations Types of glaze - production vs decorative International ingredients differences Maintaining your glaze Q & A Finish up your pots At the end of the 2 week course you will take home the pieces your have created, your own recipe notebook and a handy glazing factsheet.
